If you enjoy heritage and architecture, this Portuguese mansion is an absolute find. Albeit at the heart of North Goa’s touristy belt, Courtyard, is as exclusive and tranquil as it gets, set away from the main street and nestled within a palm-fringed courtyard. Guests will spend a large part of their stay admiring the colonial-style architecture and furniture, imagining the families that once occupied this home, in Portuguese Goa.
Spread across a whopping 2100 square metres, this 400 year old heritage villa was built in 1629 but has been lovingly restored to impress just about anyone. Some of the bathrooms are the size of bedrooms and the swimming pool is 30 feet long with an open bar and BBQ area next to it. Antique Portuguese furniture and fittings like a grandfather clock, chandeliers, four poster beds, oyster shell windows, heavy wooden doors and original tiles allow you to imagine the grand lifestyle from centuries ago. However, the classic style is balanced beautifully with contemporary design like distressed blue walls, comfortable beds with crisp white linens. Another fun element is the loft bedroom, accessed via a staircase |
Unlike the many villas dotting Goa that are styled with a Portuguese feel, this one is, in fact, the real McCoy. Courtyard dates back 400 years and has changed hands several times before now serving as a five-bedroom luxury villa, ideal for a large family or a group of friends. For starters, this stately Portuguese mansion’s refurbishment is not in the least bit contrived, and every aesthetic element is bathed in authenticity, from the traditional balcao that lines one side of the house, the high roofing and thick walls, to the mother-of-pearl panelled doors and window panes, as well as the geometric tiles.
The villa’s five massive bedrooms, each with an attached bath, are designed around a central courtyard. In addition, the living room features the most exquisite Portuguese antique armchairs and cabinets. In the place where, presumably, the backyard once stood, there is a large swimming pool and a little pool cabana to set up a barbecue or bar. You can also spend a leisurely evening in the backyard garden, where the staff will happily serve you tea, or a couple of beers. The gardens are picture perfect with fruit trees and exotic flowers including jackfruit, mango, banana, chickoo, lemon, orange and coconut trees on the property. And if all that weren’t enough, the beach and some of Goa’s best restaurants are only a five minute drive away. Vertical Divider

The villa certainly is a great place to bring kids or even senior citizens, and there are two male staff stationed in the adjoining pantry. Beyond the pool, there is an air-conditioned outhouse of sorts, which is the dining room, which seats 12. You can choose to order or make your own food, or bring your own alcohol with no restrictions as such. At an extra charge, you can request a chef too. The breakfast is copious with home-style omelettes, fruits and local bread.
